HOW TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF INSULATION YOU NEED
Saskatchewan homes are insulated the way they are because we live in one of the most demanding cold-weather building environments in North America.
There are several factors that determin how much insulation is required in a home in Saskatchewan.
Greener Solutions offers different types of insulation services. Including Spray Foam, Batt Insulation and Blown-in Insulation.
- Batt Insulation is designed to work within the specific physical boundaries of your wall studs.
- Blown-in Insulation is primarily used in the attic space of a home. Because it is loose insulation, it can’t be used in walls without drywall already in place or an insulation netting.
- Spray Foam Insulation is superior for insulating, but it is the most expensive option. It can be used virtually anywhere. The best approach is a hybrid approach where spray foam is used in specific, hard to reach places.

WHERE INSULATION SHOULD I USE?
Insulation Limitations
In Saskatchewan, under the National Building Code, residential homes use what’s called “light wood-frame construction.” That means your wall size (depth) is basically determined by standard dimensional lumber sizes.
- Exterior or Outside Walls are most commonly built with 2 x 6 iinch studs. The reason for this is, it allows for thicker insulation to be added. R-20+
- Interior or Inside Walls are often constructed with 2x 4 inch lumber. Interior walls are not usually insulated. However, they can be insulated for noise. When insulating for sound or noise, you aren’t looking for thermal resistance; you are looking for density and absorption.
- Your Floor and Celing Joists are often larger dimensional lumber. The dimesnions change based on the span of the construciton.
Typical Span Examples
- 2 x 6: Up to ~18 feet for non-storage
- 2 x 8: Up to ~21 feet for limited storage
- 2 x 10: Suitable for longer spans (up to 25+ feet).
WHY DO I NEED INSULATION?
Proper Home Inslulation, Energy Effieicent Doors & Windows and regular home maintenance will improve the R-Value of your home.
HEAT LOSS IN THE HOME
Why Your Home’s Climate is Always Trying to Get Out
In the extreme environment of Saskatchewan. Your home is essentially a pressurized vessel of comfort. Surrounded by a harsh reality.
Whether it’s +35°C in July a or a -40°C January, the air you’ve paid to heat or cool is always searching for a way out.
Understanding how this “escape” happens. Is the first step in mastering your home’s energy efficiency. Air is like water, it is always looking to escape when not contained properly. Air can escape through your homes roof, walls, windows, doors and even basement floors.
What is R-Value?
In the world of construction and home comfort. R-value is the standard measure of how well insulation resists the conductive flow of heat.
The “R” stands for Resistance. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness.
How R-Value Works
Heat naturally moves from warmer spaces to colder spaces. In the winter, heat tries to escape your home; in the summer, it tries to push its way in.
Because heat rises, your attic space requires the highest R-Value. Insulation with a high R-value slows this movement down. Keeping your indoor climate stable.
HOW MUCH INSULATION DO I NEED IN SASKATCHEWAN?
Saskatchewan is in the Climate Zone 7.Saskatchewan Climate Zone
Saskatchewan falls into Climate Zone 7.
Which dictates strict minimum R-values for new builds. To meet modern energy standards, homes in Regina or Saskatoon (and surrounding areas) typically require:
- Attics: R-50 to R-60 (often 15–20 inches of blown-in cellulose or fiberglass).
- Walls: R-22 to R-28 (typically achieved with 2×6 framing)
- Basements: R-20.

Targeting NBC 2020 Standards (Zone 7A/7B)
While the calculations are based on the National Building Code (NBC) 2020 standards for Saskatchewan’s Climate Zones (7A/7B), they do not account for the specific variables of your unique structure.
Actual insulation requirements and project costs can be affected by:
- Existing Insulation: The type and depth of materials currently in your attic or walls.
- Thermal Bridging: Heat loss through wooden studs or structural steel.
- Air Leakage: Gaps in the building envelope, rim joists, or vapor barriers.
- Accessibility: Physical limitations within the wall cavities or attic hatch.
- Building Age: Specific structural challenges found in older Regina and area homes.
