What is Batt & Poly Insulation?
Batt & Poly is a construction term for the process of installing batt-style insulation to walls and celings. Then covering the insulation with a thin plastic sheet made from polyethylene plastic.
WHAT IS BATT INSULATION?
Batt fiberglass insulation is one of the most common types of insulation used in homes. It comes in pre-cut panels (called “batts”) made from fine glass fibers.
WHAT IS POLY?
After insulation is installed, it is covered with a plastic sheet. This plastic sheet is made of a polyethylene. It acts as a vapour barrier to prevent any moisture from wicking through into the interior of your home.
Why is Poly used?
R-value must work in tandem with a proper Vapour Barrier or “Poly”.
During fall and winter months in Saskatchewan. The warm inside air and the cold outside air can create moisture. Moisture that can condense inside your walls. Ruining (lowering) the R-value of fiberglass insulation.
This moisture can also lead to mold forming inside the walls.
Mold formation inside walls is essentially a “perfect storm” of biology and physics. In a climate like Saskatchewan’s,. Where we have extreme temperature differentials. Between the cozy indoors and the frozen outdoors. The risk is particularly high.
To grow, mold needs four things:
- spores (which are everywhere),
- food (drywall paper, wood studs, or dust),
- warmth,
- and—most importantly—moisture.
